Number Race: a counting board game for kids

🔢 Number sense Strong evidence

Race along the numbers, counting each step!

▶ Play Number Race

Your child races a grown-up or a friendly turtle along a straight numbered track. They spin, then move by tapping each next number in order — counting on from where they stand.

The track grows from 1–20 to 1–100, and at higher levels your child first predicts the landing square before moving.

Studies found that playing straight number board games like this improved young children’s number knowledge, and the gains lasted.

Why it helps

Based on Ramani & Siegler (2008) and Siegler & Ramani (2009): linear number board games improved young children’s number knowledge and the gains lasted; circular boards did not.

💡 Play a real board game such as snakes and ladders and say each number aloud as you move your piece — that is the key ingredient.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the track a straight line?

Research found straight, numbered boards help children picture numbers on a line; circular boards did not help in the same way.

Who can my child race against?

A grown-up on the same device, or a friendly turtle.

What does Number Race practise?

Counting on, reading numbers and a sense of where numbers sit from 1 to 100.
