Dot Dash: a quick number sense game

Number sense

Which side has more dots?

▶ Play Dot Dash

Two groups of dots flash on screen. Your child picks the side with more dots — too fast to count, so they must estimate.

This trains the approximate number system, the gut feeling for “how many” that supports early maths.

The two amounts get closer (from 1:2 up to 9:10), there are more dots, and they show for a shorter time. Dot size is varied, so bigger dots don’t give the answer away.

How to play

  1. Two groups of dots pop up.
  2. They hide very fast!
  3. Don't count. Just guess quickly.
  4. Tap the side with more dots.

Why it helps

Based on non-symbolic number comparison tasks used to measure the approximate number system. Grown-ups can see accuracy at a fixed check-up level.

💡 At snack time, make two piles of raisins or crackers and guess which has more before counting together.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t my child count the dots?

The dots hide quickly on purpose. The game practises estimation, not counting.

Is Dot Dash a maths game?

Yes — it trains number sense, an intuitive understanding of quantity.

Why are some dots bigger?

Dot size is varied so your child must judge the number of dots, not how much space they cover.
